Which is the healthiest chocolate?

February 24, 2009

Chocolate is considered junk food, but it can be healthy- read this. Chocolate comes in so many different forms, but in its basic types, there are basically three- white, milk and dark, in the order of increasing cocoa content.

Photo- White, Milk and Dark Chocolate

Photo- White, Milk and Dark Chocolate

We talked about how cocoa contains flavanoids, which are basically heart healthy compounds. Between dark, milk and regular chocolate- dark contains the highest amount of cocoa, then its milk and then its white. Read our previous post on dark chocolate.

Milk chocolate usually contains higher amount of sugar than dark chocolate. And, white chocolate actually does not contain cocoa. It is made from cocoa butter, milk and sugar.

Between milk, white and dark chocolate, their calorific value from sugar and fat is about the same, but flavanoid packed dark chocolate comes out a winner in this race.

Family stress may raise obesity risk in children

February 23, 2009

Living in a stressful household may raise obesity risk among children, according to a study on families in Sweden. It found that children aged 5-6 years living in stressful households had the twice the risk of obesity, as compared to those in low stress households.

The family stressors were a number of various factors- ranging from parenting difficulties, spouse relationship issues, lack of social support to other life events such as family accidents, illnesses, death, divorce, unemployment and exposure to violence, as reported by Reuters Health.

In India, regardless of these factors, we are seeing more cases of childhood obesity. Its important for parents to ensure that kids get enough physical activity and don’t over consume junk food. The Indian diet is high in carbohydrates, and as we move up the financial order of society, so does the consumption of unhealthy food in our diet.

February 19, 2009

Finally, the 2009 Airtel Kolkata Marathon is here. It will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2009.

There are 3 events:
1. Men’s Marathon (42.195 km): Here is the Kolkata marathon route map. The event starts at 7 a.m.
2. Women’s Run (10.5 km): Here is the Women’s run route map for Kolkata Marathon. This run starts are 7.10 a.m.
3. SAIL Celebrity Run (4.2 km): Here is the SAIL Celebrity Fun Run route map. This run starts at 7.30 a.m.

Airtel Kolkata Marathon 2009 (waydin@flickr)

From our experience of athletic events, we suggest getting there at least an hour early, since there is chaos with parking, and so many people participating in the event. Check out our experience at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2008. Now the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2009 is coming up.

The total prize money for the 2009 run is INR 1.1 million. The winner of the Men’s Marathon will get INR 320,000. The winner of the Women’s Run will receive INR 110,000. More details on the prize money awards at Kolkata Marathon 2009.

The website claims that over 20,000 participants will be taking part, making it the largest marathon in eastern India. Considering that there isn’t any other metro in eastern India, that’s not a tough feat for Calcutta.

There is no information on how to register and participate in the Kolkata Marathon :) but they’ve provided their contact information under Contact Them. The title of the website still says Kolkata Marathon 2007. Not even Kolkata Marathon 2008, let alone 2009 :)

We think its odd to have separate runs for men and women? Most of the other marathon events, like the Delhi Marathon, or others in India do not have events that separate men and women. What if there are women who want to run the full marathon? What if there are men who want to run 10.5 km, instead of having to choose between either the full marathon of 42+ km, or the celebrity run of 4.2 km? What do you think?

Regardless, the route for the Airtel Kolkata Marathon 2009 goes through the regal Red Road- it has been the iconic pleasurable driving experience in Calcutta for many years. Running on it would be cool.

Here is a list of winners for Kolkata Marathon 2009, and Women’s Run winners for the Kolkata Marathon 2009.

Need tips to start running? Need tips to prepare for a marathon and nutrition tips during and after a marathon here. And make sure you stretch after your workout :)

This is the 5th year of the Kolkata Marathon, starting in 2005. Watch out for information on the Airtel Kolkata Marathon 2010!

Healthiest Diet Sugar substitute- Sucralose and Stevia

February 18, 2009

Continuing our article series on sugar substitutes. Previously we talked about Saccharin and Aspartame and now we will take up the remaining two sugar substitutes- Sucralose and Stevia.

Sucralose is a chlorinated sugar and is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. It is used in beverages, frozen desserts, chewing gum and other products. It is commercially available under the brand name Splenda. In India, it is commonly available as Natura Diet Sugar.

Sucralose is extremely insoluble in fat and thus does not accumulate in fat as do some other organochlorides. It is minimally absorbed by the body and passes out unchanged. The US Food and Drug Administration approved its use in 1998.

Though Aspartame and Sucralose are the most widely used, there are other artificial sweeteners gaining popularity because they are considered more natural. Stevia is widely considered as the safest of all sweeteners. It is derived from the leaves of the stevia plant (there is some artificial processing involved). It has a slightly bitter aftertaste and provides 250 to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. It is commonly used in Japan in a wide range of foods and as a tabletop sweetener.

Photo- Stevia (hebam3000@flickr)

Due to the relatively recent adoption of Stevia as a sugar substitute, there is not enough research to substantiate the long term health effects of Stevia consumption.

Coming to back to the original question – Which is the best artificial sweetener?

More than the best, its a question of least harmful and controversial artificial sweetener. Clearly, Sucralose and Stevia are the least controversial with regard to their health effects. Also, they are possibly less processed than the other two options of Aspartame and Saccharin.

We believe that natural sources are the best. Our suggestion is to watch your consumption of sugar substitutes. If you must consume, then please do so in moderation.

Healthiest Diet Sugar substitute- Aspartame and Saccharin

February 17, 2009

Diet sugars are fast gaining popularity, so we decided to find out which is the best sugar substitute for your health. Here we are considering Saccharin and Aspartame.

Saccharin is perhaps the oldest popular sugar substitute. It was originally synthesized in 1879 and its sweet taste was discovered by accident. It is much sweeter than sugar, but has a bitter after taste.

Photo- Aspartame (nextaisle@flickr)

Photo- Aspartame (nextaisle@flickr)

Saccharin has been found to cause cancer in male rats. There have been several studies on the link between saccharin consumption and cancer. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization), Saccharin is not classifiable as carcinogenic to human, despite sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity to animals. Regardless of this classification, there has been public skepticism over the use of saccharin. This has helped the wide adoption of Aspartame over Saccharin as a sugar substitute.

Aspartame is commercially available under a number of different brand names like Equal and Nutrasweet. In India, it is used in diet drinks, like Diet Coke.

It has been the subject of controversy regarding its safety since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Initial safety testing suggested that Aspartame cause brain tumor in rats, but was subsequently approved by the US FDA.

We have found no clear research that directly links health concerns with the consumption of Aspartame.

Watch out for our next article of the remaining two sugar substitutes- Sucralose and Stevia and our verdict on the sugar substitute thats best for your health.
