5 Unhealthiest Cocktail Drinks

May 29, 2009

Some cocktails are delicious, but many of those alcoholic drinks (and mocktails) are calorie loaded. Besides the alcohol, they are also loaded with sugar filled mixes. So, here’s our list of the 5 highest calorie cocktails, with the unhealthiest first …

1. The Long Island Iced Tea: We’ve all had these, but see what goes in: 1 part vodka, 1 part tequila, 1 part rum, 1 part gin, 1 part triple sec, 1.5 parts sweet & sour mix and a splash of Coke (The liquor should equal 2-3 total shots)! If the alcohol didn’t have enough calories, all the mixers are completely sugar and calorie loaded! Many of LIIT servings can be upto 780 calories! That’s almost 1/3 of your daily calorie intake. So, in 3 LITs, you would’ve added 1 whole day’s calories!

2. Margarita: On a hot day, a Margarita is tempting, but check the contents: 4 oz tequila, 4 oz limeade, 1/3 ounce triple sec. Plenty of liquor calories and the limeade is usually a sugar loaded premix. Margaritas are served in large glasses, and each can be upto 740 calories!

3. Pina Colada: This popular beach drink has 3 oz light rum, 3 tbsp coconut milk, 3 tbsp crushed pineapples, or a pineapple flavoured premix, which is almost purely sugar. This cocktail measure in at 640 calories.

4. White Russian: Great drink contains 2 oz vodka, 1.5 oz coffee liquer and 1.5 oz heavy cream. This smooth cocktail is best had when you’re in Russia, where you’ll need the 425 calories from each serving to keep you warm! Besides sugar, this drink also contains fat!

Read on to see the last of the unhealthiest alcoholic drinks!

5. Mai Tai: Tastes like dessert and calorie loaded like dessert. At 350 calories, this cocktail has 1 oz light rum, 1/2 oz dark rum, 1/2 oz creme de almond, 1/2 oz triple sec, sweet and sour mix, pineapple juice.

Similarly, you should avoid chocolate liquor loaded drinks, or dessert drinks like creme brulee cocktails :) Also, watch out for those large pegs (’patiala’ pegs).. thats a double serving of alcohol, and thus double the calories!

Did you know that besides fat storage in your body, alcohol comsumption can promote female hormone production in men and lead to male breasts. Be smarter at the bar- have these low calorie alcoholic drinks, or use these strategies to get fit at the bar!

Running Tips for Summer Months

May 27, 2009

We’ve talked enough about how running is a great way to keep fit and lose weight. But running in the Indian summer is no joke. So, here are tips on how to keep running in the mean summer months!

1. Hydrate: This cannot be stressed more, but you need to ensure you are well hydrated. Drink 1/2 litre of water before you run. Do this 20 minutes before you actually run, so its not weighing you down.
After you finish your run, get a drink that replenishes you- get a salt and sweet fresh lime soda- gives you electrolytes, vitamins, water and some carbohydrates to help your muscles recover.

More tips below..

2. Sweat wicking clothes: These clothes help keep your skin dry, so its easier to run. Cotton clothing absorbs and holds moisture, so it weighs you down and sticks to your skin. Sweat wicking clothes available in stores- big brands as well as non-branded. Get yourself some!

3. Sunscreen: Wear it and protect yourself from the sun! For the Indian skin, SPF 15 sunscreen lotion should be good.

4. Sports Drinks: For advanced runners- if you’re going to run over 45 minutes, carry a sports drink with you- for replenishing carbs and provide hydration

5. No Brainer: But you should try to run in the evening or early morning. Early morning is a little better, since the ground is a little cooler than the evening.

Need a place to run in Delhi? Here’s a list- Siri Fort Sports Complex Running, Running Track- Jahanpanah City Forest, Running  at Lodhi Garden, Hauz Khas Deer Park Running routes. These are all in South Delhi and Central Delhi.

Which is the healthiest orange juice brand?

May 25, 2009

Fruit is always better than the juice. But we all love Orange Juice. Store bought orange juice is mostly sugar loaded, but there are some options that are healthier. Ever wondered, which is the healthiest? Here, we give you a lowdown on the good and the bad of healthy orange juices, and the Fitho choice for Orange Juice!

Photo- Orange juice (pricklebush@flickr)

Photo- Orange juice (pricklebush@flickr)

We considered the leading orange juice brands in India- Tropicana, Real, Activ and Minute Maid Pulpy Orange.

Both Activ and Tropicana took an immediate lead over Minute Maid and Real, since they had no added sugar. Their ingredients were primarily water and orange juice concentrate. Between Activ and Tropicana, Activ had marginally higher Calcium content, and Tropicana had more Potassium.

Product ingredients are listed in order of decreasing weight. Real’s ingredient list is- water, orange juice concentrate, sugar, etc. For Minute Maid, it is- water, sugar, orange juice, etc.
Minute Maid has more sugar than Orange Juice, in its ‘Pulpy Orange’ drink!

Between the Tropicana and Activ, we liked the taste of Tropicana better. So, the Fitho choice for Orange Juice is Tropicana.

Below is the nutritional info for all 4 Orange Juices
Tropicana: 48 cal; 11 gms Sugar, Vitamin C- 16 mg, Potassium- 170 mg, Calcium- 18 mg. No added sugar.
Real Activ: 48 cal; 12 gms Sugar, Vitamin C-  20 mg, Potassium- 86 mg, Calcium- 18 mg. No added sugar
Real
: 56 cal; 13 gms Sugar, Vitamin C- 12.5 mg, Potassium- 70 mg, Calcium- 5 mg. Contains added sugar.
Minute Maid: 42 cal; 10.5 gm Sugar (no more info). Contains added sugar

Note that most packaging is more than 100 ml. The smallest we found was 200 ml. Most of us consume a whole package, so be careful of how many calories you’re taking in. Still, the fruit is better than the juice, so go for that!

Is brown wheat bread healthy?

May 21, 2009

Did you know that any brown coloured bread, can be called Brown Bread? It could be white bread, coloured with molasses or brown sugar that can also be called brown bread. So, on the face of it, don’t assume that all ‘brown bread’ is healthy. So, is wheat Bread healthy? Read below …

Photo- Healthy Brown Bread (agnesswart@flickr)

Photo- Healthy Brown Bread (agnesswart@flickr)

Well, any bread can be called Wheat Bread. Most of the bread available in the market uses wheat as its ingredient. so any bread using wheat as its ingredient, can be called wheat bread. Similarly, any bread can be called whole wheat bread, since whole wheat can be one of the ingredients

So, how do you know, what is real ‘whole wheat bread’? Check the ingredient listing. Ingredients are listed in order of decreasing weight- The first ingredient should be ‘whole wheat’ or a whole grain. That shows that whole wheat is the primary ingredient of the bread.

Why you should eat whole wheat bread, or multi-grain bread over white bread? The basic reason is that white bread is made from refined flour (maida), so it has a high Glycemic Index, which means that it basically acts as sugar in your body. And we’ve told you how sugar makes you fat. Basically, white bread is bad for anyone trying to eat healthy, lose weight, or diabetics (people who need to control their blood glucose level). Also, whole wheat bread or mutligrain bread uses the whole grain, so it has a higher fiber content, more protein and vitamins.

So, is whole wheat bread great for you? No, because whole wheat bread does not have a low Glycemic Index. Its better than white bread, so its a healthier alternative, but no green tea health food :)

Which is the Healthiest Mango drink?

May 19, 2009

Mangoes are a summer obsession in India, and so we love our mango drinks as well. Mango fruits is healthy but much sugar is added in mango drinks. In fact, see our previous post on the new Frooti ad - made us wonder if Frooti drinkers are unhealthy. But if you still want to drink them, know which one is the healthiest (least damaging to your belly). We took the leading names- Frooti, Maaza and Slice.

Photo- Healthiest Mango

Photo- Healthiest Mango

Per 100 ml of serving, Frooti has 61 calories and 14 gms of carbohydrates. Maaza was slightly higher at 65 calories and 16 gms of carbohydrates, and Slice had the highest calorie count at 73 calories and 18 gms of carbohydrates. All had minimal amounts of Vitamin A.

Inredients on packaging are listed by weight. The main ingredients for these drinks are water, mango pulp and sugar. For all 3, the first was water. The second, was the game changing one- Frooti and Maaza listed mango pulp, while Slice listed sugar are the second ingredient. Basically, that means that Slice has more added sugar than mango pulp in their drink, whereas Frooti and Maaza have more mango pulp than sugar.

Between the three popular mango drinks, Frooti, Maaza and Slice- Frooti is Fitho’s top choice! Maaza at a close second, and Slice at the bottom of the list.

Again, regardless of the winner, note that we take 100 ml as one serving. The small tetra packs are 200 ml and the bottles are at about 600 ml. So, if you drink a 600 ml bottle of frooti, you’ve just consumed about 370 calories, and 84 gms of sugar! Due to the excessive sugar in mango drinks, it can make you feel bloated- excessive sugar consumption increases water retention in the body.

As we always say, fruit is better than the drink :) Mango drinks are loaded with sugar, that promotes fat gain. Due to the high sugar content of mango drinks, none of these are recommended for diabetics.

Below is the nutritional information for all 3:
Frooti
: 61 cal, 14 gm carbohydrates
Ingredients: Water, Mango pulp, Sugar
Maaza: 65 cal, 16 gm carbohydrates, vitamin A and calcium
Ingredients: Water, Mango pulp, Sugar
Slice: 73 cal, 18 gm carbohydrates,
Ingredients: Water, Sugar, Mango pulp

Are you obese? New Indian obesity guidelines here

May 16, 2009

Studies predict that India will be the global diabetes capital by 2050 if the abdominal and lower limb obesity and metabolic syndrome are not arrested. Alarmed by reports, the Health Ministry has reduced the cut-off for body mass index (BMI) to 23 kg/m2 to fight the battle against obesity. If your BMI is over 23 kg/m2, then you are considered obese. The global standard for BMI is 25 kg/m2. So, someone considered not-obese by most international standards, might be obese in India!

BMI is the ratio of the body weight in kg versus height in m2. Understand how to find your BMI here. We think its wrong to judge obesity by BMI- read here to understand why.

Photo- BMI guidelines, India (hikabu@flickr)

Photo- BMI guidelines, India (hikabu@flickr)

The guidelines were released jointly by the Health Ministry, the Diabetes Foundation of India, the All-India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Indian Council of Medical Research, the National Institute of Nutrition and 20 other health organisations- Those with BMI of 25 kg/m2 will be clinically termed obese (as opposed to 30 kg/m2 at the international level) and those with BMI of 32.5 kg/m2 will require bariatric surgery to eliminate excess flab.

Along with the BMI guidelines, they have also released guidelines cut-offs for waist measurement at 90 cm for Indian men (as opposed to 102 cm globally) and 80 cm for Indian women (as opposed to 88 cm at the international level).

“The Indian body composition puts them in high risk for diabetes and hypertension (read more here). The guidelines—with revised statistics—will benefit the additional 15-20 per cent (60-80 million) of the Indian population who can now be clinically termed obese under the revised measurements,” Anoop Mishra, director and head, department of diabetes and metabolic diseases, Fortis Hospitals, New Delhi and Noida, said releasing the guidelines.

The study says one in every three Indians has high triglyceride (bad cholesterol) levels and 30-70 per cent has low levels of HDL (good cholesterol). For every 10 extra kilograms above the stipulated body weight (measured according to height), life expectancy of a person reduces by three years- the report said.

By the new obesity guidelines, every second person in Delhi fulfills the criteria of obesity or has excess abdominal fat and nearly one-fourth of the adolescent population in the capital has Syndrome X or metabolic syndrome, that heralds the onset of heart diseases and diabetes.

So, what are planning to do, to avoid obesity?
